Boboli garden
The works started already in 1550 but the Boboli gardens (together with the palace) were not completed, however, until the middle of 17th century. They are situated next to the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.

At present this garden is usually classified as Baroque one, but originally it was built in 1549 in Renaissance style on the order of Eleanor di Toledo, a wife of Cosimo I de´Medici.

During the first phase of the construction of this garden, the amphitheatre at the back of the palace was created, using the natural decline in the surface. The main axis was led through this amphitheatre, divided the garden into two parts, which was terminated by the fountain of Neptune. The Egyptian obelisk was situated in the middle of this sector (added later).

In the following years, the area of the garden was enlarged and the whole garden went the reconstruction. The previously main avenue lost its dominant significance and the garden obtained more features of the Baroque style. The new long avenue, called Viottolone , was laid out in the newly created part of the garden, at a right angle to the primary old axis. Sometimes it is called Cyprus Road due to many Cyprus trees planted together with laurel trees along it, decorated also with various statues. Additionally there are arboways on both sides of this alley, formed by bended and pruned evergreen oaks.

Viottolone connects the old part of the garden with the city gate Porta Romana. It leads up on its way a series of terraces and water arrangements. The most famous one is an oval island Piazzale dell' Isolotto, located at the middle of an elliptical pool.

The pool is enhanced by balustrades, decorative vases of flowers and statues. The little island in the middle can be reached by one of two bridges, decorated with ornamental gates.

The fountain "Ocean" is set in the centre of the island, surrounded by three sculptures representing the rivers Nil, Gange and Euphrates.
