Arboretum in Kornik
Arboretum in Kornik is located a few kilometres south-east of Poznan, around a castle of White Lady, at present the location of Kornik Museum.

The arboretum in Kornik was originally created in XVI century, as an Italian garden, then in the XVIII century the style of this garden was transformed by Teofilia from Działyńscy Szołdrska into French one.

But it was Tytus Działyński, who, after 1830 year, changed completely its layout and appearance. He turned it into English garden, at the same time enlarging its area.

Simultaneously he started works of acclimatization of many plants, originated from other geographical areas, mainly of Northern Hemisphere (the dominant species were Chinese, Japanese, Korean and North America ones). The creation of the dendrological collection, like establishing a library or collecting national memorabilia, was the passion of his life. His work was continued by his son, Jan Działyński.

The last proprietor of Kórnik of Władysław Zamoyski, had not a lot of possibilities to take care of his estates. Many years he was forced to spend in Galicia. During this period the park was brought to a ruin. According to the last will of Zamoyski the ownership of this estate was transferred to the Polish nation in 1924.

Antoni Wróblewski, a manager of the gardens since 1927, had a big input into restoring the previous splendor of this arboretum.

The Kórnik Arboretum is the largest and oldest arboretum in Poland.

At present, the garden is in charge of the Institute of Dendrology PAN and covers the area of app. 33,5 ha of so called old part and app. 8,5 ha of so called new part (open to visitors only on special occasions). The garden is divided in sections, where the rich collection of wood plants and shrubs is located, totally presented more than 3 thousands of European, Asian and American species and forms.

There are many interesting plants, some of them being even a few hundred years old. There are several famous collections of trees, among other consisting of magnolias, firs and bald cypresses with pneumatophores as well as collections of shrubs, especially of rhododendrons and azaleas.
